Meet the Artist

Hi, I’m Careine Rebecca Bernard, the artist behind Beckykreyasyon. I was born in Haiti, and drawing has been part of my story since I was a girl. Art is part of my family story too: my dad is also an artist who specializes in colorful colored-pencil portraits. I used to draw all the time at school—my notebooks were filled with sketches and little ideas. After I moved here, I took an art class during my final year of school as part of my studies. At that time, I was taking the class because it was part of school; I wasn’t actively pursuing art.

Later, while I was working a concierge job, I often had quiet moments at the desk. There were stacks of empty envelopes, so I started filling them with pen drawings and unusual shapes. People passing by would stop and ask if I was a tattoo artist. I still have those envelopes today.

A friend who is still in my life used to give me rides to work and would see my drawings. One day, he asked if I had ever thought about painting them instead. He took me to Walmart and bought me art supplies. Since then, painting has stayed part of my life. Sometimes I take a break from it, but I always find my way back.

More recently, I began taking my art seriously because of my daughter. She has become one of my greatest inspirations. I want to make art for her—to create something meaningful she can see, remember, and one day feel proud of. Painting is a way for me to share my love with her and show her that it’s never too late to follow what is in your heart.

My Haitian roots and my love of bold color find their way into my work. I’m drawn to expressive faces, vivid patterns, and images that celebrate strength, beauty, identity, and imagination. Every painting is part of my journey as an artist and as a mother, and I hope my work brings a little color, joy, and connection into your home.
